TV Says "No Signal" on HDMI? 10 Fixes That Work

A black screen and a "No Signal" message is frustrating but usually easy to fix. Try these ten steps — from the right input to cables, power and settings.

You plug in your streaming stick, game console or soundbar, and the TV just shows "No Signal". Don't worry — in most cases it's a two-minute fix. Work through these steps in order.

1. Check the input

The most common cause! Press Input or Source on your TV remote and select the HDMI port you actually plugged into (HDMI 1, 2, 3…). The port number is printed next to it on the back of the TV.

2. Make sure the device is powered on

Streaming sticks need power from a wall outlet (or sometimes the TV's USB port). Look for a light on the device or its power adapter. Consoles and cable boxes need to be switched on.

3. Reseat the cable

Unplug the HDMI cable from both ends and plug it back in firmly. With sticks, use the short HDMI extender that came in the box if the stick doesn't sit well.

4. Power-cycle everything

  1. Turn off the TV and the device.
  2. Unplug both from power for 60 seconds.
  3. Plug the TV back in and turn it on, then the device.

This "handshake reset" fixes a surprising number of problems.

5. Try another HDMI port

Ports can fail. Move the cable to a different HDMI port and switch the input to match.

6. Try another cable

HDMI cables break inside, especially cheap or bent ones. Swap in a different cable. For 4K HDR at high frame rates, use a cable labeled Premium High Speed or Ultra High Speed.

7. Check the TV's HDMI settings

Some TVs have per-port settings like HDMI UHD Color, Input Signal Plus or Enhanced format. If a device won't show a picture, try turning this setting off for that port (or on, if 4K isn't working).

8. Lower the device's resolution

If the screen flashes or stays black, the device may be sending a resolution the TV can't show. Connect to a different TV or port, then set the device's video output to Auto or 1080p.

9. Check soundbars and receivers

If the device goes through a soundbar or receiver, test by plugging it directly into the TV. If that works, check the soundbar's input and passthrough settings.

10. Update or reset

Update the TV's software. As a last resort, reset the streaming device to factory settings (you'll need to sign in again).

Still no picture?

Test the device on another TV. If it works there, the problem is your TV's port or settings. If it doesn't, the device or its cable is faulty.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my TV say "No Signal" when HDMI is plugged in?

Usually the TV is on the wrong input, the device isn't powered, or the cable isn't seated properly. Check those first.

Can an HDMI cable go bad?

Yes. Cables can break inside, especially when bent sharply. Try a different cable.

How do I reset the HDMI connection?

Turn off and unplug the TV and device for about a minute, then turn the TV on first and the device second.

Why does my 4K device show no signal?

The TV port may need its enhanced HDMI setting enabled, or you may need a high-speed cable. You can also set the device's output to Auto.
